I guess a general view among many young hippies was that society had become so materialistic, and so destructive of mother earth, that it was necessary to get out of that system in order to find new, more peaceful and spiritual ways and alternative lifestyles. The kinds which would allow a person to live freer, and in accordance with their ideas and beliefs, not just following the general materialistic dog-eat-dog trends of society.
